I learned so much throughout my time here at SNC in the communications department. I learned how to communicate in groups, one on one, with myself, and overall what makes effective communication. There are so many strategies and so many ways you interact with the world around you. This has helped me with the interviewing process and how to communicate my thoughts clearly. There are certain times and places to say certain things. I learned ways to communicate to people above me through verbal and body language. I now notice certain theories in the world when I am looking at social media or little advertisements in movies to know who is helping sponsor the film.
I specialized in media studies through communication. I really enjoyed learning about advertising as well as social media and its effects on the viewers. These are major areas that people see in their day to day lives so I also think they are the most relevant for me. I had overlap with my two majors. My other major is political science and understanding communication will help me immensely in this field. I engage in a lot of social scientific research. Many of the studies were people out in the world and examining how they communicate. I have seen critical research but the majority of it is social scientific science. Many of the communication professors are social scientists. Much of the critical research were done in my biology, chemistry, or political science classes.
After college I would like to work in sales. I really enjoy communicating and trying to persuade people. Making an argument for why something would benefit someone is really interesting to me. I also would be interested in working in HR if sales does not work out. Outside of the classroom, all of the clubs I have been involved in helped me with this major. I had to make events happen, advertise for them, decorate, also run for positions and communicate how I would be best for the role. Communication is everywhere and this major has taught me so much that will prepare me for the world.
